This is a belated posting because I’ve been having problems adding images; still do! As soon as we get this worked out, I’ll add pics. I just didn’t want to put off posting a “Happy Birthday” (albeit belated) to our dear friend, Gary, last Sunday, October 2nd! A few more events in the folder to share, also.

Anyway, we joined our good friends and Kelly Lake neighbors Saturday—Gary, Kathy, their daughter Jenna and her boyfriend, Clark—for nearly a half-day celebration of Gary’s 59th birthday a day early! We decided to get the party started here at 2 PM to watch the Brewers WIN, while we imbibed in some libations and munched on hors d’oeuvres.

Later that evening, we headed to Gary and Kathy’s cottage a few doors down the road for cake and ice cream, and watch the Badgers WIN! Of course, you know the Packers also WON!

Sunday, Gary and his son, Jerad, went pheasant hunting and bagged a couple! What a weekend for celebrating Wisconsinite sports and Gary’s birthday! Happy birthday, Gary! Rog and Shirley

The “Blue Herry Cup”: Kelly Lake’s Sequel to Survivor!

Tighten up your pull strings and doff your shirts for the Kelly Lake “Blue Herry Cup Challenge”; you’re gonna get wet and exhausted! What’s a ‘Blue Herry’? When Jeff Levar—one of the creators—was little, he couldn’t pronounce “blue heron”, ergo blue herry was selected as the name and it stuck. His sisters and their husbands, Juli and Robin Pickering, and Laurie and “Big Jeff” Menden, along with neighbors Lynn and Paul Green with the cooperation and help from Lynn’s mother, Dianne Matushka, started the competition 11 years ago. Jeff’s dad, Greg Levar, Paul Green, Jake Komossa and I are the impartial judges; Shirley is Cup’s photographer.

The ‘Cup’ is by invitation and is held at Levars and Matushka’s adjoining cottage/home on the west shore. There’s usually four teams.

The first event (I’ll try to be brief): Riders in tubes, all attached to the boat, are blindfolded. Questions are asked which had a number for an answer. For example; “What is absolute zero?” Teammate writes number on pad and secretly shows judges. Member furthest off looses, and is going to be yanked away by the boat. The loosing rider unknowingly is left connected to the boat, but the others are hand-towed for a little ways to give them the feeling they might have lost! The engine roars as the looser takes off, while those remaining cheer!

Second competition, “The bucket brigade”. Tossers are blindfolded and must throw the water to the catchers who fill the 5-gallon buckets to win.

Blindfolded Juli misses her mark, tossing the water to an opponent; don’t have to tell you everyone was screaming to her!

Competition three; slinging water balloons over trees to the backyard where a catcher with a 5-gallon bucket tries to complete the play; each team goes separately.

Competition four: Slippery slide along picking up as many flags as the team could get.

A novel approach! Hey, I thought we were missing a flag!

“Verdy interesting, but verdy strange!” Dianne Matuska and daughter Lynn Green look on from the shadows!

Fifth competition: Spin ten times around the bat, run to finish line where you grab your partner “wheelbarrow-style” and race back to finish. Grab bean backs and toss in hole, gaining more points.

Last competition—Playoff: Four teams are made into two; red and blue with eight on each team Build a bridge from start to finish using just two two-by-fours and three 5-gallon buckets! Teammates in sequence move boards and pails, stepping along without falling; if you fall, you start over.

A CLOSE FINISH! Jeff and Josh (far lane), just beat Robin and Tracy! Robin and Tracy fell right at the start, but rebounded to make it one-heck-of-a finish!

Shirley and I had a ball again this year. We can sit back and enjoy the hard-fought competition with determined competitors! Every year has been something knew that Jeff and the creators dream up; they must have way too much time on their hands! But, it’s a blast! Rog and Shirley

2011 KLAA Annual Pancake Breakfast One of the Biggest!

“It was a shotgun turnout right from the start”, according to Del Darby, Jr! “We hope we’ve planned for enough.” And yet, he hoped they didn’t order more than they could use.

Family members and friends paraded by the cooks with paper plates extended as sausages and pancakes were mounded on; coffee and/or juice picked up on the way to find an open seat. This years turnout was the largest I’ve seen.

The Kelly Lake Advancement Association’s President, Ken Darby, was on hand to cook-up and serve the attendees. Ken also wanted to do something different this year: Make it a family/social function as well as an informational venue to share events and issues of lake interest.

On hand were handouts for proper wave runner use and rules; pier rules; signs posted with lines of demarcation representing 100′ and 200′ so people had a reference/perspective of just how far to stay away from other boats, rafts, docks, swimmers SCUBA divers, etc. Upcoming Kelly Lake Triathlon and Holt Park concerns were also shared.

Addressing these issues in an organizational, relaxing format where a large group has easy access to information has been a long time coming; many hate attending meetings. As President, Ken wants to create a KLAA that can be more of a sounding board and voice for the community to address various issues, as well as a social group to enjoy the camaraderie; an objective and mission I personally feel is needed. Third Annual KLAA Cardboard Boat Race August 6th, 1 PM!

Get on board—or should I “box”—and join the third annual Kelly Lake Advancement Association sponsored “Cardboard Boat Race”! After great enthusiasm following the first boat race, last year’s was even bigger and better with more spectators at the spectacle! SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS Audition

An audition will be held for the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) production of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS on Monday, August 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Falls Area Performing Arts Center, 210 North Farm Road, Oconto Falls. Those auditioning should arrive by 8:45 a.m. and plan to stay until 11:00 a.m. Some of the cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition.

Among the roles to be cast are Snow White, Queen Bella, seven Dwarfs, her Forest Friends, Black Forest Creatures, a Magic Mirror, Bats, Henchmen and the King. Students entering 1st grade through 12th grade are encouraged to audition. No advance preparation is necessary. Assistant Directors will also be cast to aid in rehearsals throughout the week, and to take on essential backstage responsibilities.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre touring productions are complete with costumes, scenery, props and makeup. MCT Tour Actor/Directors will conduct rehearsals throughout the week from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. Special workshops will also be available for students on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1:45 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS will be presented on Saturday, August 13 at the Falls Area Performing Arts Center at 3 PM and 7 PM. Tickets are $11 for adults and $6 for students. All tickets are subject to a $2 processing fee. The Missoula Children’s Theatre residency in Oconto Falls is brought to you by the Oconto Falls Friends of the Arts and sponsored in part by CENTURYLINK.
