Snowing!

Don’t think this was predicted, but the snow is situated over our area. Feb twenty-three; still winter, but kinda pretty. The snow thingy usually gets old this time of year! About 4 fluffy inches and still snowing heavy, straight down,  big flakes! Roger {:>)

Summer’s almost here!

This from a friend/brother firefighter (Manitowoc), Mark (Rooster) Rustbolt, who has spent many summers coming to Kelly Lake, and now frequents father-in-law’s cottage (Don Moss) on White Potato Lake. Roger

“Summer’s

almost here …we

can now see the deer moving

around in the back yard.

Yep, won’t be long!”

Summer ’07 archives!

I am really in the spring mood, which then makes me eager with the anticipation of summer and cruises around the lake.  Shirley and I can seldom resist the urge to stop at old friends and Kelly Lakers like  the O’Neils/MacDonalds on our voyages by land or sea around Kelly Lake.

The aforementioned have been friends for decades. Joining us in these pictures are the children and friends of theirs, especially friends and Kelly Lakers Derel and Shirley Teteak (Derel a former Green Bay Packer linebacker in the mid to late 50s; number “66″!).

We’d head out on their pontoon with plenty of hors d’oeuvres, ale and grog to wash it all down.  Mike, at the helm of the party barge, seldom allows a minute of quiet; the party MUST go on. OK, ok, I embellish a bit and take liberty to poke jest at my long time friend, Mike!

On return, we employ our athletic prowess lawn bowing (I thought I’d correct the spelling here to “bowling”, but found ‘bowing’ was much funnier!), Botchie Ball and the like.

Then, it’s returning to their cottage where luck and temptation play in fast games of dice. May I add that the games are wicked and intense, voices raised in playful banter; games like “Ship, Capt’n and Crew”, and games they made up like “Bolivia”, “Argentina”, “Quarters Game” and more.  And, of course, “The Shake of the Day” where you can win half the booty!

Oh, I’m in anxious anticipation of winning the “Shake of the Day” this coming summer! Roger

This photo from the ’88 summer fun archives with Becky Birr and friend, Niki (Curtis) Coopman (Brad’s wife now) sailin’ away to the far corners of Kelly Lake! The girls were about 13 then. Niki is the daughter of Greg (Squeaky) Curtis (the friendly handlebar mustached bartender at the Holiday Inn who recognizes you by the libation you imbibe in), and mother, Jenny (Stewart) Curtis who is Shirley’s sister.  Roger

“Arrrghhh, mind the mainsheet; hardened up; bring ‘er on the wind, close-hauled and look lively!!”

Remember when you were a kid at Kelly Lake; enjoying the summer?!

Going through the archives I came upon these photos of memories of enjoying the waters all my life.

These pictures are of my daughters, Rebecca (Becky), bailing the rowboat after a summer’s rain for a leisurely rump out on Kelly Lake; Becky, Beth and Laura sailing on Lake Michigan, and me setting out across Lake Michigan.  I’m the Capt’n taking their pictures and barking out commands (not really!).

The photos were taken when Becky was about 8 or 9; 26 years ago; her Capt’n was 35!  Beth was about 8 and Laura 4, taken a few year later while sailing on Lake Michigan (all three about 4 years difference in age).

Becky and her husband, Tye, have given us three grandchildren; Brenna, Evan and Nathan. Brenna is 7.  They help me live my past with the fun and love for the water.  Our entire family has enjoyed growing up on Kelly Lake, and on Lake Michigan and on Two Rivers’ two rivers! Roger

“Becky, there’s a no-wake policy here!  Slow down!”

Me setting off at 6 AM single-handed across Lake Michigan to Ludington on Quiet Riot.  14 hour sail one way.  I was about 35.
