March! In like a lamb, out like a LAMB!

Beautiful sunshiny summer day here at the lake! I’m busy finishing our dock–one section to go, while Shirley’s painting. It feels like summer. Wish you were here! I could use some help! Roger {:>)

“Print Scrn” from my weather station; 76.3 DEGREES:

Navigation now open to Kelly Lakers!

Yesterday afternoon (Tues the 30th), with mild temps in the mid-60s and strong southerly winds gusting to 20+, the fractured and honeycombed ice was pushed to the north shore, opening the lake to boaters… Temps today are suppose to be in the low to mid-70s under high cloud-filtered skis.

Our new wood dock is nearing completion.  I like the look and feel of the traditional wood dock (kinda Cape Cod-ish!), not to mention building one for a fraction of a metal one; though, the metal ones roll out; but, ours is only 36′, three sections; and, it takes little time to set it on the pre-formed stanchions; no pipes to drive in! Did I mention it’s only a fraction of the cost?!

Anyway, WOW(!), are we excited… looking forward to the rest of spring and summer! We’ve accomplished a hugh head start on freshening-up Birr’s Eye View with cleaning, painting and raking! We should be ready to sit back and relax (somewhat… garden’s gotta go in), and enjoy a long summer season!

Here’s a pic of a muskrat and some buffohead ducks–if you can see them navigating the open waters.  Turtle Cove still has some remnants of ice on its shore. Roger

Kelly Lake’s Michelle Lutz seen here with her personal idol!

From the start of his career on American Idol, Taylor Hicks is Michelle’s favorite idol. She’s followed his rise to fame, collecting CDs and attending his performances when he comes to town.

Michelle is seen here with Taylor.  Roger

Sun rising on depleting ice.

Another mild day with winds 10-20 mph should certainly deplete more ice today. Highs in the low 60′s Roger

Lake level; surface water; water table; ground water; aquifers… How they affect Kelly Lake!

It seems when we talk about the weather here at Kelly Lake, ice-out or rain/snow, I’m asked if the Lake will be up this year; at present it only might be a couple inches; not much change.

Dock length, boating, water activity, etc., becomes the subject of conversation. This spell of low water is of concern right now. I remember when we were all concerned about the high water–I put in 19 tons of shoreline rock! Now, I have about 8′ of beach!.

I’ve always said, “Well, it’s a water cycle that averages high-to-high every 14 years on average”. I’m not sure if that explanation holds true any more… are water levels lowering with the potential of not cycling back, or even to high water cycles again?

I’ve been a member of “Wisconsin Association of Lakes” for a number of years. After WAL participated in studies of lake levels and learned more about surface water, water tables, groundwater and aquifers, I’m not so sure revisiting my old explanation is satisfactory anymore.

Be that as it may, I encourage you to log onto http://www.facebook.com/l/efa5e;www.wisconsinlakes.org/policy_groundwater.htm for an overview of a Bill being proposed, and become a member of WAL. Draw your own conclusions… And, if you’re thinking like me, you might want to get involved (see how). The Bill is subject to a voter April 8th (coming up!).

Some laws that were enacted as of February 1, 2010 are (a synopsis):

N115; imposes minimum setbacks and how you can conform through mitigation.

Act 9; RESTRICTS THE USE OF FERTILIZER CONTAINING PHOSPHOROUS–takes effect APRIL 1, 2010.

Act 31; restricts the operation of motorboats at SLOW-NO-SPEEDS WITHIN 100′ OF SHORELINE… WATER SKIERS MUST BE 100′ FROM SHORE unless a special permit for a buoyed pickup and drop area is obtained from DNR.

Act 55; restricts the transport of aquatic plants and animal…

Act 63; restricts the amount of phosphorous in machine dishwashing products…

I receive WAL’s “The Lake Connection”. Again, if you want to learn more, log on to http://www.facebook.com/l/efa5e;www.wisconsinlakes.org/policy_groundwater.htm ,
or WALS Home page, http://www.facebook.com/l/efa5e;www.wisconsinlakes.org/index.html . However, I couldn’t seem to find the exact info as in their periodical. You might want to subscribe. Roger
