I was a science/math teacher and just addressed Anderson Cooper with this question:
“Re weather patterns: Have any meteorologist experts been approached to find out if the weather up here in the mid-west will be affected by the oil slicks (to what extent the slicks may become)? I’m wondering if they’ll prevent the water vapor from escaping into the atmosphere, generating rain. Many of the fronts reaching here are a result of the warm, moist gulf air masses bringing rain to our area here in Wisconsin. Thank you. Roger Birr”
AC has been closely covering the Gulf oil spill. I’ve been watching with interest; haven’t heard if the spill continues and creates a large slick, might it have an atmospheric impact as far north as here; we need the rain. If I hear anything, or you have, I’ll post it.
I’m a sailor, and those of you who are also open-water sailors, know that pouring a small amount of oil in the water around the boat during a raging storm, or soaking a bundle of rags and hanging overboard, calms the immediate waves around the boat to some extent; one tactic often tried; not always effective. How will the ‘slick’ effect storms/hurricanes in the Gulf? Hmmm. Roger

You don’t have to live here to love it! Kathryn White reminds us all how lucky we are to have shared short and longtime memories of good times on Kelly Lake. She depicts many of thes memories not lost in her beautiful paintings, sketches and drawings. She’s offered us her images she’s taken back from Kelly Lake; a longing to languish through the wintry days away; romancing the wonderful Lake, sunsets and country life!
Here’s a note she wrote of her joyful years spent here; usually summer stints at the Taylors:
“Hi guys! Thanks for the nice facebook message and invitation to post some pictures on your beautiful site. I have seen it before about a year and a half ago and enjoyed it. In the middle of the winter, my sister and I start to day dream about the lake. I hit the internet to reminisce and stumbled upon your site. My mom’s side of the family rents the Taylor Cottage (On the East side of the lake where G comes in) every year in July. My aunt has been coming up the longest since I believe 1973 or so and would probably be the name anybody would recognize (Mary Beth Denz – now Haar). Where are you guys located? I’m glad to hear it has been a nice spring. It was amusing to see the pictures of the Lake under snow on your website as it exists as a mythical, perpetually sunny place in my mind. I know it was fairly chilly last July – are they predicting a warmer summer?
Unfortunately, my normal laptop has been in for repair for awhile and so I don’t have access to the original pictures right now. I had to send thumbnails of products. I hope they work. At least they are already compressed. I also sent some photos of some sketch prints I have of various barns near the lake. The “tie-dye” looking cards etc, I created from an image of a Kelly Lake sunset. Please let me know if the attachments work and if the links below work

Thanks, Kathryn, for your contribution to the Kelly Lake web site, and sharing your wonderful pictures; I’ve included your sites in “Links”! Be sure to look Shirley and I up on your next visit. Shirley grew up on a farm near here; near Hickory Corners. I’ve been coming up here all of my 61 years. Together Shirley and I have lived full time here at “Birr’s Eye View” for 20 years. Here’s a photo from the lake, in the southwest corner of the cove. The web cam is located on our upper deck in the left corner. I’m guessing we’re gonna have a great summer; weather or not! See you around! Rog and Shirley Birr

Dads woke up to a beautiful day here at Kelly Lake. We’re looking forward to spending time on the lake with our daughter, Becky, son-in-law Tye and three grandkids, Brenna, Evan and Nathan! We don’t care to spend the day in a supper club missing out on the partyly cloudy and warm day, but rather enjoy some boating and water fun, throwing in a fry out.
Happy Fathers Day, dads! Rog and Shirley

Kelly Lake and area lake levels are often the subject of conversation; “…lots of props damaged over at our shore”; “Don’t know if I’ll launch my boat this year!”; “Can’t even get to my dock!”; etc; etc!
Here’s some more information provided to add to previous postings. Many ideas spring forward as to how to regain, sustain and maintain the lake’s water level. Back in ’88, I recall our beach about the same as it is now. About 7 years ago, we put 19 tons of rock on our shore and lakefront property due to shoreline erosion. It sits dry as a bone, as the shoreline has retreated back to approximately ’88s beach. Will the 19 tons of rock ever be needed again?! Perhaps these links will provide some promise… OR dismay.
