Kelly Lake’s Joanne Randerson

While rowing quietly around the lake and along the shore in her kayak, Joanne caught me sunning and reading on shore while Shirley was raking the beach:  “Hey, what’s with this?!  How come Shirley’s working and you’re sitting?!”

Stuttering, I defended myself,”Ah, Ah, I got my day in!”  It was about 9 AM—actually a poor comeback; and she caught me!  We visited quite awhile, catching up on our lives to date.  Seeing any of the Randersons, or for that matter any of the Naiad Charter Members brings back fun and fond memories.  Many of us believe many of us would never have come to know each other albeit for the ski club; members came from all corners, backgrounds, abilities and personalities; oh, the variety of ‘personalities’!

When a group of us got together in ’79 to form a water ski club, we put out notices for members. The Kelly Lake Randersons were some of the first to join with enthusiasm and excitement!  Tom, Barb, Patty, Maureen and ‘Joanne’ played a hugh part in planning and performing with their enthusiasm AND natural athleticism.  They were fit, pretty (Tom was handsome, OK?), congenial and fun to be around.  They were always there for practice and fund raising pizza sales, clean-up walks, bake sales… anything to keep the club afloat. Also see http://kellylake.net/?s=naiad .

It was a fine visit again, even though it looked like I was an ogre at first observation; sitting, sunning and reading while Shirley was working!  Roger

“Kayak” in Eskimo means, “icanoecanyoucanoe?”.

Joanne and me way back then at practice.

The Randersons played an important part performing in the pyramid, ballet, Barb standing on her head on a disk, etc.

Berry interesting…

Kelly Lake’s Jack Peterson made a date with my wife, Shirley, to go blackberry picking Tuesday. I find it awkward to interfere with my wife’s dates, especially when I like blackberries so much.

By 7:00 AM they rendezvoused here—right under my nose(!)—and set out for a place known to Jack for its abundance of blackberries; back in the woods where only a four-wheel drive could get them; hmmmm. I confess I was getting a little worried after 3 1/2 hours; I hoped they weren’t lallygagging; not that I’m a jealous-type-of-guy, but I was afraid they were hording the blackberries for themselves! I had hoped for blackberry pancakes or at least a copious covering for my Special K and milk; I was getting hungry!

Curbing my appetite by munching from the Special K box, the two finally arrived in the drive at 10:30, loaded with a few gallons of blackberries from bushes from where Jack won’t disclose; nor Shirley, if she ever wants to go back.

Jack is quite the aficionado when it comes to preparing the berries for eating, baking or freezing. He reprimanded Shirley for any “bruizin’ to the berries” she might incur.  The cleaning is a delicate process to remove bad berries, bugs and debris. Rolling in a towel to get most of the water off, they’re bagged for refrigeration. I observed the process while taste testing their bounty.

Blackberry picking is a treacherous task; preparation and caution greatly thought out. Dressing properly, says Jack, is of the utmost importance. Even so, Shirley still sustained barbed punctures and cuts even though well covered. Was it all worth the cuts, punctures and scrapes? I thought so! Roger

Pics from Shirley’s Garden.

Last year, with the cold crumby spring, Shirley never bothered starting her garden. With the early warm beautiful spring and above normal temps this summer, her garden flourished. We had plenty of rain that would last a day or two, then the sun was out for four or more days.  It was a hot hot humid summer; one we won’t forgot!  Come to think of it, we kinda forgot the cold crumby rainy spring/summer of  ’09!  I guess in some ways it’s a blessing that we have short memories!  In fact, and I speak from experience, the older you get, the shorter the memory!  OK, what was I saying…

Oh… this year she planted the usual garden variety vegetables; carrots, peas, beans, corn, tomatoes, etc… even watermelon.  Her flowers did well; included sunflowers for the first time.  As a kid, I was always fascinated by them and still enjoy the tall stalks that dwarf all other plants; kinda like a fantasy garden from the story books.

“Eb”, the scarecrow(?), in the last pic, seems quite pleased with the garden; almost as if it was his; likes to think its his; thinks he does most of the work!!  This isn’t Green Acres, Eb!  Shirley’s there somewhere… keeping an eye on him!  See Her?!

Commercial Cast On Kelly Lake With A Cast Of Kelly Lake Locals!

The commercial is complete!  Jack and Danielle spent hours editing and formatting the clips (no pun intended) of the Aveta hair commercial!    What amazed me was how they made a home cassette video camera transform into digital quality for computer enhancement; seeking out an adapter cord was the difficult part; we  found they’re not readily available.  It was Jack’s first attempt at a commercial!  I congratulate our won Kelly Lake’s Jack Peterson!  See it on the “Kelly Lake VIDEO Cam” in “Links” at right.  Roger

Here’s a post I submitted about a week ago of the film-making process:

Local models were selected, along with props used right here, for a commercial at Kelly Lake including boats, backgrounds and even pine cones from the Park.  An Aveda Hair Products commercial by Kelly Lake’s Jack Peterson was in the making.

The storyline goes something like this:  From what I gather, Jack courts two beautiful beach belles by inviting them for a day’s romp on the lake in his not-so-mechanically-correct-boat.  As luck would have it (and I mean ‘luck’; Jack didn’t have to lie and use the “Oh, I think I’m out of gas” routine), the boat breaks down near a secluded shore on Kelly Lake (Holt Park Campground beach; I’m sure this has never happened to any of my readers!).

Anyway, Jack then turns to Jenna — waitress at the Kelly Lakeside Restaurant; a beautiful brunette — and does one of those “60s Beehive Hairdo” makeovers.  I don’t know where he got the Styrofoam cone-shaped top to wrap the hair up and around (perhaps cut out from the flotation in his old Larson boat!), but  it formed Jenna’s long lovely hair into a towering vault; she’d never sink, for sure!  A gorgeous retro-fit!  Oh, the memories of those days as Jenna has the final touches creatively enhancing the new look.

Enter Cassie; a lovely blond girl; another waitress at the Kelly Lakeside Restaurant.  Jack claims he can do a make-over using pine cones (I don’t have the picture yet–waiting for some to come in–of the pine cones used as rollers placed in her hair, but it was actually very attractive and unique!).  Jack explains that, no, the pine cones are not the final look; they will be removed.  He further elaborates and expounds saying his hair spray is made from pine resin and has a special holding property; it retains its resilence even in high humidity (it was quite humid that day, in fact).  The ‘pine cones’ are merely for publicity and effect

So far, so good.  Jack completes his pine-cone-hairdo-makeover and everybody is delighted.  Enter two good-looking, muscular playboys, Eddie Randerson and Collin Swanke cruisin’ chicks in a sleek fast roomy expensive top-of-the-line powerboat.  The girls turn from looking at each others’ new-do, to poor beguiled Jack looking forlorned and fading, to the brash bold beautiful BOAT; and, it came with two drivers!  A last look at Jack staring back in disbelief; a sweet wave and a “see-ya later, Jack”, and the mutiny of the models making their way to the beach and through the waves to the awaiting and eager playboys.  Woe is Jack; end is story!

We all had fun.  I missed my part as a beach guy “walking” through, pouring glasses of water.  Shirley and I had to leave.  We had tickets to “Walking With the Dinosaurs”!  Roger

Oh… did I mention that Jack’s a hairdresser by trade?  Or have you guessed!
